Teriyaki Tofu

This incredible recipe is salty, sweet and packed with umami. Definitely one of the best preparations of tofu I've had, right next to Chinese braised tofu. It's hard not to eat the whole thing, until you think about how much soy sauce is in it :D. It's also very easy to make, so it's a great tradeoff for how delicious it is.

Ingredients:

  • 12 or 14 oz. (350 g or 400 g) extra firm tofu

  • 1-2 Tbsp. oil

  • 1/3 cup light soy sauce (like Kikkoman)

  • 1/4 cup water

  • 3 Tbsp. brown sugar

  • 2 Tbsp. rice vinegar

  • 2 Tbsp. mirin

  • 1 tsp. sesame oil

  • 1 tsp. ginger

  • 1 large garlic clove, minced

  • 1/4 tsp. white pepper (or black pepper)

  • Cornstarch slurry: 1 Tbsp cornstarch, 2 Tbsp. water

  • Optional garnishes: Sesame seeds, green onion, Chinese red chili flakes

Directions:

  1. Rinse the tofu block and cut in half and then into 1/4 inch wide pieces (or whichever shape you'd like).

  2. Heat the pan on medium heat with 1-2 Tbsp oil. Add the tofu in a single layer and fry 5-7 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.

  3. While the tofu is frying, Mix together the sauce ingredients, which is everything except the slurry. Set aside. Also mix together the cornstarch slurry and set aside.

  4. When the tofu is ready, turn the heat to low-medium and pour in the sauce. Simmer for 10 minutes, or until slightly reduced.

  5. Add in the cornstarch slurry and stir, cooking another 30-60 seconds until thickened.

  6. Garnish and serve with rice and/or vegetables. Enjoy!

  7. 2-3 servings.


All the ingredients, yes there are quite a few :D


Rinse and cut the tofu.


Start frying the tofu in some oil.


While the tofu is frying mix together the sauce.


Also mix together the cornstarch slurry.


Tofu is golden brown on both sides so we can add the sauce next.


Add the sauce.


After simmering the sauce about 10 minutes. Next we add in the cornstarch slurry.


After mixing in the cornstarch slurry and letting it thicken.


Garnish if you'd like and it's ready to serve!
