These are incredible sugar cookies that taste identical to spritz cookies! They're easy to make, roll out, and decorate. My mom lists this recipe as "Edible Christmas Butter Cookies" because it took her years to find a sugar cookie recipe she actually liked.

The recipe is here, and pictures of the process are below:

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened

  • ¾ cup sugar

  • 1 egg

  • 1 ½ tsp. vanilla

  • 1 ½ cup flour

  • 1 tsp. baking powder

  • ¼ tsp. salt

  • Food coloring (optional)

Frosting:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar

  • 1-3 Tbsp. milk

  • Food coloring (optional)

Directions:

  1. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

  2. Mix in vanilla and egg.

  3. Sift together flour, salt, and baking powder in to a separate bowl. Then add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined.

  4. Color the dough if desired. Wrap and chill for 1 hour.

  5. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line two baking trays with parchment paper.

  6. Roll the dough out on a floured work surface.

  7. Bake for 6-8 minutes at 350°F.

  8. Let cool completely before frosting.

Now to make the frosting:

The frosting should be pretty thick and come off the whisk in slow ribbons.

You can dye the frosting if you'd like.

And then decorate!
