An easy cake recipe that turns into a cake AND hot fudge when baked!? What more could you need? It's perfect for ice cream but is also good as cold leftovers. This hot fudge cake has a cake batter base, then a mixture of brown sugar+cocoa powder sprinkled on top, and then before you bake it you actually pour hot/boiling water all over it. What this does is melt the sugar and chocolate to make an amazing sauce at the bottom!

The recipe is here and pictures of the process are below.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 3/4 cup sugar

  • 6 tablespoons baking cocoa, divided

  • 2 teaspoons baking powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 cup 2% milk

  • 2 tablespoons canola oil/melted butter

  • 4-8 oz. semisweet chocolate chips or chopped chocolate

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1 cup packed brown sugar

  • 1-3/4 cups hot water

  • Ice cream or whipped cream, optional

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. In a large bowl, whisk flour, sugar, 2 tablespoons cocoa, baking powder and salt. In another bowl, whisk milk, oil and vanilla until blended. Add this mixture and the chocolate into the flour mixture; stir just until moistened.

  2. Transfer to an ungreased 9-in. square deep baking pan. In a small bowl, mix brown sugar and remaining cocoa; sprinkle over batter. Pour hot water over all; do not stir.

  3. Bake 35-40 minutes. Serve warm. If desired, top with ice cream.

  4. You can cover and refrigerate for up to a week. The chocolate sauce turns into a pudding-like texture and it's delicious when eaten cold as well. Otherwise you can reheat and enjoy all over again.

  5. 9 servings.

So here's the cake base.

You then sprinkle the brown sugar+cocoa mixture over the cake batter.

Then you carefully pour boiling water over the whole thing and stick it in the oven!

Me anxiously watching it.

And it turned out lovely! Look at all that chocolate sauce!

Goes perfectly with ice cream!
